We’re thrilled to announce that Vibrant Waves  is partnering with Melodies as Medicine , a Florida-based, student-led nonprofit founded by Jonathan Hus that brings the healing power of music to seniors around the world. At Vibrant Waves, we believe in the power of creativity and connection to support emotional well-being. Melodies as Medicine shares that mission through music, using student-led performances to spark joy, and connection among seniors. Together, we’ll be creating more opportunities for intergenerational connection and creative activities that bridge the gap between youth and elders. To learn more about their inspiring work, visit their website (https://melodiesasmedicine.org/) or follow them on Instagram (@_melodiesasmedicine)

This past Sunday (May 18th, 2025), I volunteered at my second Greta’s Run (https://www.facebook.com/gretasrun/), a local 5K and community event that blends physical activity with remembrance and support for mental health. That morning I helped set up barricades, passed out water, and cheered on runners as they crossed the finish line. Greta’s Run, created in memory of high schooler Greta Schoenemann and supported by Imagine (https://imaginenj.org/), brings people together to support grief counseling and mental health programs. It was great to see so many familiar faces, especially the kids I facilitate at Imagine, at the event. After the race, we joined the Memory Walk, a calm and reflective path lined with signs honoring loved ones who had passed. Walking beside families and reading their messages was a moving experience. I learned a lot about the power healing in communities.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and serves as a great opportunity for our community to begin eliminating stigma by starting conversations and increasing understanding about mental illness. 1 in 5 people will have some kind of mental illness in a given year and stigma is the greatest barrier to individuals seeking help regarding their mental illness. By breaking down the stigma around mental illness, we can support those who are struggling to find resources and treatment.  https://www.urbandaleschools.com/school-news/may-is-mental-health-awareness-month-resources-and-support/
